After Glen Campbell’s final bow, his wife, Kim, stands at the microphone to strengthen her fellow caregivers.
Campbells

The voice and guitar that touched millions with such hits as Southern Nights, Wichita Lineman, and Rhinestone Cowboy—has left the stage.  In his place steps a tiny woman with her own powerful voice to encourage her fellow caregivers. From isolation to loss of identity …to the physical challenges of a small woman with a large husband with dementia, Kim Campbell opened her heart on my show for family caregivers to give us a glimpse into the difficulties of caring for a spouse with Alzheimer’s disease.

Glen-Kim_CampbellKim: It’s enough for me to just deal with today.  I think it’s good to have a hint, an inkling of what you’re going to face in the future so you can prepare yourself, but I didn’t want to dwell on that.  I was really scared to death, actually to find out about the final stages.  Now, I’m there …I’m in the late stages.

Peter:  How is it?

Kim:  It’s heartbreaking.  Absolutely heartbreaking.   But, you just have to accept this is way things are.  There’s nothing I can do to change it, so I just make the best of each day, and try to find joy in each day.  And I do.  There’s always joy there if you look for it.

A couple of seasoned caregivers, Kim and I paused during our caregiver journey to share hard-won insights.  For more information on Kim Campbell, visit her blog at www.Careliving.org
